Schoolchildren tried their hands at new practical skills at a Trades Circus supported by Halton Housing Trust, giving them a glimpse of what life is like in the working world.
As many as 70 pupils - took part in the Trade Circus project, which aims to give pupils a valuable insight into the workings of a variety of different jobs.
The annual event took place on Tuesday, June 24 and was hosted by The Heath Specialist Technology College in Clifton Road, Runcorn, to support pupils from both mainstream schools and special schools across the borough.
During the Trade Circus, the Year 9 pupils, all aged between 13 and 14 years-old, were taught practical trades’ skills in a series of workshops run by a painter, plasterer, bricklayer, florist, the police, a flooring company, an electrical company and media make-up artist.
Among those taking part were trades-operatives, including plasterers and bricklayers, from Halton Housing Trust who are working on the social landlord’s £129 million improvement programme.
The Trust provided a number of helping hands on the day including bricklayers John Shaw and Keith Hinde, painter Dennis Mullarkey, plasterer Adam Backhouse and Team Leader David Jones who gave the youngsters a taste of their expertise.
As a result of the Trades Circus, many youngsters go on to enroll in practical courses at Riverside College or with other local training providers.
Nick Atkin, the Chief Executive of Halton Housing Trust, said: “The Trade Circus project is a fantastic initiative which has given many youngsters the confidence to excel in practical skills.
“We want to engage with the youngsters and give them an insight into what jobs are available in housing and construction because we are keen to provide training and employment opportunities for local people. One day these young people may be able to come and work for the Trust.”
Andy Page, the Manager of Halton Education Business Partnership, added: “The Trade Circus is active learning at its best. Children learn more effectively when they learn by doing.
“Add the involvement of local businesses, such as Halton Housing Trust, and this provides all the ingredients for a recipe of sure success.”
