16/05/2011 - Young people have their say

HALTON Housing Trust has held its first youth forum giving young people the opportunity to have their say about their community.

The Trust – working in partnership with Action for Children’s Halton Youth Service – met the youngsters at Kingsway Youth Centre where they took part in a Ready, Steady Cook-style challenge.

“Our customers asked us to engage with young people in the area and that is what the forum is designed to do,” said Trust Customer Involvement Officer Ann Kingsbury, who organised the event.

“The young people will have the opportunity to have their say on housing and environmental issues but there will also be a lot of fun for those young people that get involved.”

In a bid to engage the young people the events will include lots of fun challenges and activities as well as a serious chat about the community.

Ten young people turned up to the first forum and were given the opportunity to create their own burgers to meet their individual tastes.

Judges marked their efforts based on work space hygiene, presentation and taste with the winners receiving a £10 gift voucher and all participants received a certificate for taking part.

Halton Youth Service who are based in CRmz, the new and exciting youth facility in Halton were extremely supportive in helping the Trust to set up the session.

Noel Sharpe, Director of Customer Services at Halton Housing Trust, said: “We pride ourselves on listening to our customers and so the youth forums are going to be an important way to engage with young people in the area.

“I hope they continue to be a success with even more young people taking part in future.”
