PEOPLE in Runcorn and Widnes are being encouraged to save money through the Credit Union.
Halton Housing Trust is running weekly surgeries at the Queens Avenue shop in Widnes, offering benefit checks, money advice and information about the Credit Union.
It is also offering to make £2 payments on behalf of Trust customers so they can open a savings account.
“We are trying to encourage customers to start saving with the Credit Union because it is a good option for them,” said Claire Creed, a Welfare and Benefits Advice Officer for the Trust.
Earlier this year the Trust helped the Credit Union as it opened a new office in Widnes as demand for the service was stretching the resources in the Runcorn office.
One of the Trust’s Welfare and Benefits Advice Officer is available in the office every Tuesday between 1.30pm and 4pm.
They offer advise to customers on what is best for their circumstances, including avoiding taking out a loan to pay off rent arrears.
As a Credit Union customer someone is entitled to apply for a loan for up to double what they have saved if they have made regular payments for 10 of 13 weeks.
“The Credit Union is a good option because it does make you think about your money,” said Amber Cairns, a Welfare and Benefits Advice Officer for the Trust.
“You can ask to withdraw your money, but it takes two days so it gives you time to think before you dip in and take out your money.”
