What is hate crime?
Hate crime is any incident or action which is motivated by prejudice or hate, it can be against people because they belong to a particular group this can include incidents against people because of their race, faith, disability, age or because they are lesbian, gay, an asylum seeker or travellers.
Hate crime can take many forms, including:
- Physical assault and threats of violence or assault
- Harassment
- Offensive graffiti
- Arson
- Written or verbal abuse or threats
- Neighbour disputes
- Damage to property or possessions
- Racist, hate-motivated or offensive graffiti
- Abusive or obscene telephone calls
- Intimidating groups hanging around
- Offensive leaflets and posters

What should you expect when you report a hate crime?
We treat all reports of hate crime incidents seriously and will investigate within 24 hours. Any racist, hate—motivated or offensive graffiti to be removed within 24 hours once reported and any related damage repaired as quickly as possible.
We work closely with other agencies including police, local authority and support and voluntary organisations to ensure we offer you support, advice and keep you fully informed of the investigation and any resulting options.
