What if I get into arrears?

At some time you may have a problem paying your rent because you are having financial difficulties. If you are in this situation you must contact your local housing office straight away and speak to an Income Recovery Officer on 0151 510 5204. We will do our best to help.

We will:

  • Offer you a private interview at one of our offices or in your home.
  • Check if you can claim Housing Benefit and help you fill in the claim forms.
  • Work with you to help you set a weekly budget.
  • Work out reasonable repayments to help you pay the money you owe.
  • Put you in touch with a money advisor.

What we will do if you owe us money for rent

This is the action we will take if you owe us money for rent. At each stage we will give you the chance to make an agreement to pay. If you keep to your agreement to pay then we will not take any further action.

  • We will contact you and ask you to pay the money you owe.
  • If you cannot pay all of the money, we will make a repayment agreement with you.
  • If you do not keep to your agreement, we will send you a Notice of Seeking Possession.
  • If you still do not work with us to pay the money you owe, we will get a Court Order.
  • If you do not keep to the Court Order we will go back to court for a Warrant to carry out an eviction.

You are in receipt of Housing Benefit and don’t pay rent

Although you may not pay rent directly, you are still responsible for your Housing Benefit claim. If the Council has not made payments to us, you need to contact them and pursue your claim. If you fail to pursue your claim we will consider taking legal action against you for possession of your home.

The Trust works closely with other agencies to make sure that if you are experiencing financial difficulties you receive all the help and support you need.

You can contact an Income Recovery Officer on 0151 510 5204 who will offer you help and support or you can contact one of the specialist agencies available to help.
