Halton Housing to trial latest technology in elderly care systems using AI and Energy Data

Halton Housing is working with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and smart energy focused start-up, Informetis, to trial a new method of ensuring its elderly and vulnerable customers are safe and well based, on data gathered from electrical appliance usage within their home.

Informetis is a spin-out from what was previously Sony Corporation’s R&D Energy Division. Its vision is to enable the collection, analysis and reporting of the electricity usage in a home, as well as a solution to monitor unusual activity.

The company recently created an “itemised view” of an electricity bill that shows how much electricity each of the main electrical appliances uses in the home, for example, fridge, washing machine and microwave. As a by-product of this, Informetis launched a new “Assisted Living Trial.” Halton Housing will shortly be rolling this out amongst a number of its customers who have volunteered to take part.

The Trial will involve using AI based sensor technology to help support some of Halton’s elderly customers in their own homes. With a single sensor fitted to the main fuse board, it can estimate the operational status and power consumption of key appliances within the home.

Using cutting edge AI (Artificial Intelligence) it will learn the “normal” pattern of behaviour of the appliances such as kettle, cooker or TV and will be able to spot any “abnormal” behaviour or trends. This will provide an alert on an App which close family and friends have access to. For example, if the kettle is always used at least two times a day and on a particular day they have not used it even once, this will raise an alert.

Overview of Informetis solution.

Halton Housing Lead Disruptor, Lee Reevell said: “We are incredibly excited to be working with such an innovative company as Informetis and using the latest technology and innovation in elderly care systems. By tracking the behaviour of electrical appliances in some of our elderly and vulnerable customers’ homes, we will be able to pre-empt when we need to intervene to check on their welfare. This will assist them to live more independently in their own home with extra peace of mind for families.

Informetis Senior Board Advisor, Jay Chinnadorai said: “We are extremely delighted to be working with Halton Housing, a leading innovator and disruptor in the Housing sector, to trial our solution for the first time in the UK Housing sector. We have already launched this solution commercially in Japan and look forward to working with Halton Housing to do the same within the Housing sector in the UK. Our company philosophy has always been about using ‘technology for good’ and this Assisted Living service is a great example of putting that into practice.”

The project will start from mid-January 2019 and will last one year.
