Right to Buy and Right to Acquire are government schemes where tenants can apply to buy the home they live in, at a discounted price.
Owning your home can be expensive, and only you can know if buying your home is the right decision.
Our Commercial Services Team manages the sales of Halton Housing’s homes.
Right to Buy
If you were a secure tenant on 5th December 2005, you are more than likely to be eligible for the Right to Buy Scheme.
The amount of discount depends on how long you have been a tenant. The longer your tenancy, the greater the discount you will receive up to a maximum limit.
Previous tenancies and tenancies with other councils and housing associations can sometimes count towards this.
If you’d like to find out more about the Right to Buy then take a look at the Government’s dedicated Right to Buy website at www.righttobuy.gov.uk. You can also use their right to buy calculator to help understand the level of discount you may be entitled to.
Right to Acquire
If you became a tenant after 5th December 2005, and have had your tenancy for three years, you could be eligible to apply through the Right to Acquire scheme.
The amount of discount you receive is a fixed amount published by the Government, regardless of how long you have been a tenant.
If you’d like to find out more about the right to acquire then take a look at the Government’s website page for Right to Acquire at www.gov.uk/right-to-acquire-buying-housing-association-home.
How does the current scheme work?
You apply to buy your home by filling in an application pack and sending it to our Commercial Services Team.
Once all the relevant forms have been completed, we will appoint a Valuer to assess the market value of your home. We will then make you an offer based on the market value, taking in to account any discount that you are entitled to.
How do I apply?
Please complete our online form to request an application pack. You can also use this form to make an enquiry. When your form has been reviewed, we will write back to you confirming whether or not you have the Right to Buy or Right to Acquire. We will then issue you an application pack through the post.
