Reporting rent changes on your Universal Credit journal  

Update: Monday 18th May 2020

Have you updated your Universal Credit online journal with your new housing costs for 2020/2021? If not, ACT NOW as you are losing out on benefit you are entitled to!

We are aware of a number of customers who have not updated their new housing costs following the increase in rent which took place from April.

Failure to update your journal with your new housing costs will mean you do not receive the full amount to cover your monthly rent charge. This results in rent arrears and risks possession proceedings commencing.

Universal Credit will only backdate a change for one month. The longer you leave updating the change in your journal, the less benefit you will be paid and the more arrears will accrue.

Changes in circumstances should be reported within two weeks of them occurring. Late reporting of changes may incur a financial penalty from Universal Credit which is deducted directly from your monthly payment.

Remember it is your responsibility to update your journal.

For customers claiming Universal Credit, the earliest you can report a change in your rent in your journal is from the date it takes effect. It cannot be done in advance of the change date. You must, however, report this change no later than 14 days after it takes effect otherwise you could lose out on benefit you are entitled to.
