Universal Credit Payments in 2019/2020

For the rent year 1 April 2019 to 5 April 2020, if you are in receipt of Universal Credit housing costs you will need to budget to pay an extra weeks rent.   

This is because there are 53 Mondays in the rent year, but the Universal Credit Regulations 2013 calculate housing costs based on 52 weeks a year, before adjusting for rent free weeks. Therefore, the amount you will need to pay to cover your rent will be based on a maximum of 52 weeks or 48 weeks dependent on the number of weeks your rent is normally charged. 

That means that there will be a ‘mismatch’ between what your rent charge is and what you will be paid by the Department for Work and Pensions. You will need to budget carefully for this difference so that you keep your rental payments up to date. 

This is unfortunately outside the control of Halton Housing
